Abstract

For This article explores the history and development of Sufism in Indonesia, focusing on the interaction between Sufi orders and the socio-cultural context of the archipelago. By examining the role of Sufi figures such as Sheikh Siti Jenar, Nuruddin Arraniri, and Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari, the article reveals how Sufism and tariqahs adapted and developed amidst the influence of colonialism and local culture. It also highlights the syncretism between Islamic Sufism and Indonesian spiritual traditions, as well as the role of tarekat in social and political rebellion, although not all tarekat advocate violence. Furthermore, the article discusses how Sufism spread to Indonesia through various channels such as trade, conquest, and Sufi influence, and how Sufism's teachings such as tawhid and the dignity of seven acculturated with local values. Despite different views on Sufism's tolerance, Sufism still plays an important role in Indonesian Islam. Using a qualitative-library research methodology, this article presents an in-depth analysis of how Sufism and Tariqah have contributed to the social and religious context in Indonesia, and how they have acculturated with local values to form a unique spiritual identity in the archipelago.
