Tolerance is one of the important pillars in offering an antithesis to the face of religion that tends to appear frightening. Reading about the portrait of tolerance between religious communities in each region is important because it is an integral part of efforts to overcome potential conflicts in a very heterogeneous society. This study highlights the importance of understanding the local context in analyzing diversity and tolerance. Pakelan can be said to be a sub-district that meets the criteria as a miniature of the State of Indonesia both de jure and de facto. By using a phenomenological approach, this article seeks to explore and photograph the face of tolerance between religious communities and beliefs. The results of this study are first, the face of tolerance is attached to several activities in the form of ideas, concepts, and social activities, which are manifested in the context of houses of worship, selamatan, kurban, Phba and so on. The conclusion of this study is that tolerance is not a static condition. Conditions of tolerance and intolerance need to be placed in a broader spectrum. A region can have a more tolerant character than another region, but because no region is completely tolerant or intolerant, the position on the spectrum can change along with socio-political changes. The terms tolerance and intolerance should not be interpreted narrowly, only related to theological religious views. The theological orientation in Pakelan does not necessarily prevent religious adherents and believers from living side by side with each other. Tolerance is a multidimensional condition, related to aspects of values, social and structural.
