Abstract

Wellness tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors within the global tourism industry, marked by rising attention to holistic health, emotional balance, and spiritual well-being. This study aims to analyze the development, business models, and regulatory frameworks of wellness tourism and the spa industry at the global, Asian regional, and Indonesian levels, with a particular focus on opportunities to apply regenerative wellness principles in policy and destination development. The research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 30 scientific articles indexed in Scopus and ScienceDirect, along with official reports from the Global Wellness Institute, ESCAP, and the Ministry of Tourism. The findings indicate a global shift from luxury-based relaxation to more meaningful, sustainability-oriented healing experiences. In Asia, wellness practices have evolved through the integration of cultural heritage, spiritual philosophies, and technology. Meanwhile, Indonesia possesses strong potential through its traditional spa practices, herbal remedies, and community-based tourism, which reflect harmonious human–nature relations. This study highlights the importance of innovative business models, professional certification, and the strengthening of digital ecosystems across the entire customer journey. The main conclusion suggests that Indonesia holds significant potential to become a center for regenerative wellness in Southeast Asia by adopting an approach that balances economic, social, and ecological values.
