Abstract

Oliver Twist film is a British film released in 2005 and has themes of crime, violence and
bullying. This film, directed by Roman Polanski, originates from the publication of a novel by
Charles Dickens which has a true story which tells the struggle of an orphan in experiencing
the downturn of life in his village during the Revolutionary Era in England. This research
discusses the causes of bullying, forms of bullying in semiotic analysis and messages regarding
bullying prevention according to Hindu religious teachings. Data was collected using
literature study methods, documentation and online data search. The results of the research
and data analysis show: (1) The causes of bullying in the film Oliver Twist can be seen from
internal and external factors (2) The forms of bullying in Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis of
the film Oliver Twist are in the form of verbal bullying, physical bullying and relational
bullying which will then be analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotics (3) Messages regarding
the prevention of bullying in the teachings of Hinduism, namely instilling the values of Tat
Twam Asi, prioritizing Ahimsa and implementing the teachings of Susila. Based on the results
of the discussion in this research, the film Oliver Twist has an important moral message about
human values, social justice, courage and compassion.
