ESTETIKA INDRAWI SENI KARAWITAN BALI: TINJAUAN FILSAFAT SENI BAUMGARTEN

Balinese karawitan (traditional music) is a form of cultural expression that not only presents musical beauty but also embodies profound spiritual and symbolic dimensions. This article examines Balinese karawitan as a sensory aesthetic experience through the lens of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten’s philosophy of art. Baumgarten viewed aesthetics as a legitimate form of sensory knowledge, equal to logic, where beauty is perceived through the interaction of the senses, emotions, and rationality. Balinese karawitan—with its rich tonal systems, dynamic structures, interlocking rhythms (kotekan), and close connection to ritual—serves as an ideal medium to actualize Baumgarten’s aesthetics in both contextual and philosophical terms. This study shows that Balinese aesthetic experience is not limited to formal musical elements but is deeply rooted in collective experience, spirituality, and local concepts such as rasa (emotive feeling) and taksu (spiritual charisma). Beauty is not only heard, but also felt through vibrations, atmosphere, and inner resonance. This approach affirms that traditional Balinese art can be understood within a Western philosophical framework while maintaining its unique local character. Thus, the sensory aesthetics of Balinese karawitan reflect a harmony between body, soul, and the cosmos, remaining relevant for both cultural preservation and contemporary artistic innovation.
