Abstract

This study aims to analyze media constructions of news coverage on Pura Negara Gambur Anglayang in Kubutambahan Village, Buleleng, as a symbol of religious moderation and a space for intercultural communication. The media holds significant power in shaping social reality through framing strategies that influence public perceptions of tolerance and diversity issues. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using Robert M. Entman’s framing analysis method, which includes four main elements: defining problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and suggesting remedies. Data were collected through observations of online news reports published in three Bali-based local media outlets—Bali Express, Nusa Bali, and Detik Bali—during the 2022–2024 period. In addition, documentation such as books, academic journals, and prior studies were used to strengthen the context and validity of findings. The results show that all three media outlets generally frame Pura Negara Gambur Anglayang within a positive narrative that supports the image of interfaith harmony. Bali Express highlights the temple’s role as a center of cultural integration and spiritual tourism; Nusa Bali emphasizes its socio-religious function as a space for community tolerance; while Detik Bali focuses more on the temple’s symbolic significance within national discourses on diversity. The framing constructed by these media tends not to raise issues of local dynamics or potential tensions, but instead reinforces idealistic images of tolerance. Within the context of intercultural communication in Kubutambahan, these framings largely align with social realities, as communities demonstrate peaceful coexistence practices among adherents of different religions. This research is significant for critically examining how local media construct discourses of diversity and how such discourses reflect—or obscure—the realities of intercultural communication. The findings contribute to media literacy development, cultural communication studies, and the strengthening of community-based narratives of tolerance.
