The philosophy of art is a part of philosophy that discusses works of art and human activities on these products, with speculative efforts to present a systematic and complete view of all reality. Leo Tolstoy as one of the figures of the philosophy of art, emphasized the great role of religion in guiding progress towards a perfect human being, because the main purpose of art is to perfect human life. One of the arts in Bali and used in religious rituals is the art of karawitan or called gamelan. The sound of gamelan is able to create a magical atmosphere in religious rituals and arouse emotions for the listener. Gamelan instruments are not only profane art objects, but sacred objects because they go through a purification process and are used as a complement to religious ceremonies. The virtues of karawitan art in Bali are contained in several texts, such as Prakempa, Aji Ghūrṇnita, and Tutur Tabeh Tabehan which contain the philosophy of gamelan instruments, both the gods worshiped and their use in religious rituals. Balinese karawitan cannot be separated from the concept of Hindu aesthetics, namely Satyam or truth, Siwam or purity, and Sundaram or balance. The sacredness of the art of karawitan and the text of Aji Ghūrṇnita is in line with the philosophy of art put forward by Leo Tolstoy, that karawitan instruments are able to perfect religious rituals and increase belief in God.
