Tradisi Menek Medesa di Desa Lemukih Kecamatan Sawan Kabupaten Buleleng (Kajian Bentuk Fungsi Makna)

Abstract

The Menek Medesa tradition is considered a sacred custom by the people of Lemukih Village, which must be followed after a marriage is carried out. This tradition has existed since around the 14th century AD, before the influence of Hindu-Javanese culture from the Majapahit Kingdom arrived. It is believed by the people of Lemukih Village to carry deep meaning. Based on this background, the formulated problems are as follows: 1) What is the form of the Menek Medesa tradition in Lemukih Village, Sawan Subdistrict, Buleleng Regency? 2) What is the function of the Menek Medesa tradition in Lemukih Village, Sawan Subdistrict, Buleleng Regency? 3) What is the meaning of the Menek Medesa tradition in Lemukih Village, Sawan Subdistrict, Buleleng Regency? The theories used to analyze these problems are: 1) The theory of religion. 2) Structural functionalism theory. 3) Symbolic interactionism theory. The data collection methods used are observation, interviews, literature study, and documentation. The data collected was then analyzed to draw conclusions.  The research results show the following: 1) The origin of the Menek Medesa tradition is based on the fact that Lemukih Village does not recognize the caste system. Anyone who wishes to live in or be part of Lemukih Village must accept this principle. The tradition has been continuously practiced from ancient times to the present. 2) The form of the Menek Medesa tradition includes: the place and organizers of the tradition, the tradition itself, the process of implementation, and the facilities and infrastructure supporting the tradition. 3) The functions of the Menek Medesa tradition include: strengthening of faith and devotion, purification, social functions, and as a means of repelling misfortune. 4) The meanings contained in this tradition include: ethical meaning, the meaning of harmony (in accordance with the Hindu concept of Tri Hita Karana), and symbolic meaning expressed through the elements used in the ceremony.
