ABSTRACT
This research aims to explore the concept of ‘Merdeka Belajar’ in the digital era and
the challenges associated with character education in the context of free learning. With a
focus on character education, this research seeks to understand how learners can develop
strong character along with freedom of learning in the context of education in the digital era.
The research method used is adescriptive qualitative approach with data collection through
literature study. The results show that ‘Merdeka Belajar’ in the digital era provides extensive
opportunities for learners to access learning resources independently, but also presents
challenges in character education in an all-digital learning environment. These challenges
include maintaining ethics and morality in using technology, managing constantly evolving
information, and developing independence that is balanced with character values. The
research also found that unequal access to technology, lack of teacher understanding and
misuse of technology can have negative effects. This research can also help educational
practitioners, academics, and policy makers to improve ‘Merdeka Belajar’ in the digital era
by considering character education.
