Banyuwangi represents a microcosm of Indonesia's diversity, with its multicultural society
comprising various ethnicities and religions. This diversity fosters social harmony through the
implementation of ethical tolerance as the foundation of community life. Tolerance, as Edward
Said stated, is not merely about acceptance but involves active efforts to understand, respect,
and collaborate across differences. The practice of tolerance in Banyuwangi is evident in
various aspects, such as interfaith cooperation during religious celebrations, social
interactions through cultural traditions like Gandrung Sewu and Barong Ider Bumi, and the
integration of pluralism values in education. Key roles are also played by religious leaders,
community figures, and media in promoting awareness of tolerance. Furthermore, economic
stability and intergroup experiences enhance inclusive social relations. Despite its
achievements, challenges remain in maintaining and strengthening tolerance. Thus, efforts
such as tolerance education, interfaith dialogue, digital literacy, and the preservation of local
traditions must continue to ensure social harmony. As Kofi Annan noted, “Tolerance, whether
between religions or individuals, is the foundation of lasting peace.”By addressing the factors
influencing tolerance, Banyuwangi demonstrates that diversity is an asset rather than a threat.
It serves as a tangible example of how harmony in diversity can be achieved, embodying the
spirit of Bhineka Tunggal Ika. Sustaining this spirit ensures that Banyuwangi remains a model
for multicultural coexistence.
