Abstract

The concept of ethical institutions developed by Hamka has significant relevance in strengthening religious moderation in society. It teaches moral and ethical values that are based on common sense and ethics, which can enrich a moderate understanding of religiosity. In the context of taklid, namely following teachings without critical judgement, this concept encourages the enlightenment of the mind to form a more rational and reflective religious attitude. Religious moderation requires a balance between following religious teachings and applying logic and rationality in religion. By exploring the values of ethical institutions, individuals are expected to understand religious teachings more deeply and critically, reduce the potential for extremism, and promote tolerance and openness in society. Therefore, the integration of the concept of ethical institutions in religious education serves as an important means to build a religious community with a spirit of moderation, while avoiding the trap of taklid that can hinder the development of reason and spiritual enlightenment. The concept of Lembaga Budi initiated by Hamka has important relevance in the effort to build a logical religious society in Indonesia. This study aims to analyse how Hamka's thoughts on Lembaga Budi can strengthen the spirit of religious moderation in the midst of Indonesia's diversity. Using the content analysis method of Hamka's works as well as related literature studies, this research explores the essence of Lembaga Budi as the foundation of ethics and morality that balances the spiritual and rational dimensions. The results show that Hamka's concept of Lembaga Budi emphasises the importance of logical and critical reasoning in understanding and practising religious teachings. This is in line with the principle of religious moderation that prioritises a contextual and substantive approach to religious texts. Lembaga Budi also encourages an inclusive and tolerant attitude through an emphasis on universal values such as justice, honesty and compassion.
