Abstract

This study aims to examine the construction of character values through the Balinese folktale “I Siap Badeng” in Hindu Religious Education learning at SD Negeri 3 Banjar Jawa, Buleleng. The research is motivated by the great potential of Balinese folklore as a source of local wisdom that has not been optimally utilized in Hindu Religious Education learning, which tends to be textual. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with Hindu Religious Education teachers, students, and traditional leaders, as well as document analysis of the folktale. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The results showed three main findings. First, the folktale “I Siap Badeng” contains character values aligned with Hindu teachings, including children's obedience to parents, cleverness and vigilance, the law of karma phala, and mutual cooperation. Second, the process of value construction occurs through a cycle of three phases: (a) presentation and emotional immersion to evoke moral feeling; (b) exploration and negotiation of meaning through reflective dialogue to build moral knowing; (c) reflection and self-application to encourage moral action. Third, the content and presentation of the folktale correspond to the concrete operational stage of cognitive development (Piaget) and the pre-conventional to conventional moral stage (Kohlberg) of elementary school students. The study concludes that the folktale “I Siap Badeng” is a strategic, contextual, and transformative pedagogical vehicle. Its successful integration requires the development of graded modules, teacher training, and collaboration with traditional leaders.
