ABSTRACT
This research aims to analyze the implementation of literacy based on the Mahabharata story in efforts to develop students' character and reading skills at SD Negeri 1 Mayong. The Mahabharata story, which is rich in moral values such as honesty, responsibility, courage, cooperation and discipline, is used as a learning medium to shape students' character while improving their reading skills. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews and document analysis. The research results showed that the implementation of literacy based on the Mahabharata story significantly contributed to the development of students' character. The moral values taught through stories have been successfully internalized by students, as can be seen from changes in their behavior at school and at home. Apart from that, students' reading skills also improve, especially in the aspects of text comprehension, intonation and vocabulary enrichment. However, this research also identified several challenges, such as the complexity of the story, limited learning resources, and the lack of optimal learning environment support. The conclusion of this research is that literacy based on the Mahabharata story is an effective method for forming students with character and improving reading skills. To support the success of this implementation, support from the school is needed, the provision of more adequate learning resources, and the active involvement of parents in the learning process.
